Every January, I was trapped in the “diet” mentality. I would look at girls on my instagram feed or YouTube and envy their bikini bods while feeling shame for the 5-8lbs I would gain during the holidays. And every year I was in complete and utter DENIAL about the harsh judgment and restriction I created around my body.
This was the FIRST year that I can honestly say I was completely AWARE of this process. Watching it unfold as a movie that i’ve watched over and over again, predicting the outcome and desperately wanting to change it.
And after a lot of internal struggle, I finally have.
2018 is the year that I END dieting and step into BODY PEACE.
I want to welcome you to this journey with me as I share the power of INTUITIVE eating and how to LET GO of the dieting mentality.
ITS NOT YOUR FAULT…
We have been raised in a society that encourages EXTREMES. It’s become the norm to push our bodies past the point of exhaustion. This imbalance of masculine energy, has left us completely fried, judgmental of ourselves and angry.
- We can’t seem to get our shit together.
- Other women make it look so easy.
- Our will power has no power at all.
I’ve felt ALL of this anger and so much more. I’ve played the blame game and I’ve had pity parties on several occasions over the course of 2017. I’m no longer giving into extremes or the idea that I NEED to look a certain way to be a confident role model because being perfectly imperfect is SO much more fun.
BREAKING UP WITH DIETING
What I’ve learned through this process, is that this IS a uphill battle and set backs can and should be expected. I entered into the diet mentality in high school and YEARS of programming cannot be un-done in a matter of days or weeks.
- Letting go of judgement
- Self-discovery through self-care
- Intuitive eating
All have aided in my break up with yo-yo dieting. Though its been a slow journey, I have made progress that I’m proud of.
#1) I no longer label the way I eat. Paleo, Keto, and Vegan were all words I used to describe myself in the past. But diets SHOULD NOT define you as a person. Labels also but you into a box, one of restriction and deprivation.
#2) I said “good-bye” to the clean eating club. My old habit was eat super “clean” during the week and on Friday-Saturday go to town with a free-for all. This mind-set led me to binge on the weekend, feeling extreme guilt & shame. Lesson learned- When you STOP controlling food, food STOPS controlling you!
#3) What works for someone else may be completely destructive for my body even if its deemed “healthy.” I’ve tried it ALL. I was a diet FANATIC and got high off the rush and possibility a new diet would bring. I always had high hopes and blinders UP when I started a new diet but this mentality led to a serious downfall in my health from deficiencies associated with food group restriction.

YOU CAN AND WILL HEAL
So how am I feeling about this whole intuitive eating lifestyle?
There’s a sense of FREEDOM that I haven’t felt around my relationship with food since I was a little girl. When I just ate when I was hungry and didn’t dissect each ingredient I was putting into my body.
With all the HYPE that the media pushes on us DAILY on what to eat and what NOT to eat. On the hottest new super foods and weight loss tactics, I feel like a huge brick just lifted from my shoulders leaving it all behind. **Insert huge “SIGH” of relief**
Now don’t get me wrong, I still believe in the POWER of REAL FOOD to heal and nourish the body, but when this becomes a obsession (aka orthorexia) you become a prisoner to your diet.
Intuitive eating doesn’t mean that your diet mentality should be a a free for all consisting of donuts, pizza and macchiatos, but BALANCE and honoring your cravings in a healthful + sustainable way.
As I continue to STRENGTHEN my own mind+body connection, I will be sharing with you all my tips + tricks for leading a more intuitive life.
