Breathwork Healing vs. Mindful Breath
Have you experienced a release of trapped emotions from Breathwork? Most new breathers have practiced mindfulness, pranayama, or breathing exercises in meditation but have never unlocked the true potential their breath holds. However, it’s important to acknowledge the role mindful breathing has in Breathwork, and how they are different.
What is Breathwork Healing?
In a Breathwork Healing Journey, a guide encourages you through a conscious, circular breathing pattern in a ceremonial setting for 40-60 minutes. It’s here that you enter into a deepened transcendental state of consciousness.
Breathers will often describe their breathwork journey as a similar experience to a psychedelic trip because, within 10-15 minutes of breathing in this way, memories, images, emotions, and experiences begin to cascade through. All of which allows you to feel the depths of your being. The breath invites us to meet those spaces within the body that have felt closed off or suppressed. This modality of healing has been used for decades to overcome depression, anxiety, PTSD, disconnection, overwhelm, self-sabotage, etc. and experience more profound healing of the past.
My first ever breathwork ceremony completely blew me away. At that time, I was trying every alternative modality under the sun to heal my physical body from Lyme disease. In that introductory session, I felt more shifts than I had in a year of EDMR, Energy Healing, Hypnosis, EFT, Tapping, etc.
Every session is a unique journey, never the same as the one before. Because I lead so many new breathers through journeys, I’m always humbled by their testimonies of what they experienced. I also have three testimonial highlights with insights on how others are describing their own journeys.
What is mindful breathing?
Mindfulness breath is a more general way to establish a breathwork routine and deepen a calming response within your body. It can be done at any point in your day, even for just a moment or two. Coupling the mind with the breath can be a powerful tool to rooting yourself in the present.
You can begin exploring mindful breathing by simply noticing the breath. Pay attention to how it fills your lungs and chest; then focus on the sensations of the exhale. Many guided meditations in books, videos, and podcasts (like my own) can gently establish your understanding of mindfulness breath. Like Breathwork healing, this too can give you a greater sense of awareness, control, and peace in your life.
Final thoughts
It’s nearly impossible to articulate what comes through in a breathwork healing ceremony. This is often a reverent spiritual experience, one that leaves you feeling completely in awe.
I cannot wait to begin guiding groups in person here in Grand Rapids when I return from maternity leave. Still, in the meantime, I have three Virtual Breathwork Healing Ceremonies where you can experience this work from the comfort of your own home.
