There are two types of people in this world (at least for this example), energy givers and takers. Everything is made up of energy, and this isn’t new information. However, much like how introverts and extroverts draw stamina from different forms of social interaction, givers and takers leave opposite energetic impressions on others.

Who is an energetic taker?

If you were to take a quick stock in your mind of the people you interacted with in the past day or week, I’d bet you could pick out one or two that left you feeling a bit drained from their interactions. Energetic takers, or drainers, are people who have a negative aura. They often feel exhausting to spend time with or constantly engage in behaviors that drain you of productivity, creativity, and joy.

Of course, everyone has a bad day and is not going to be in a state of energetic support 100% of the time. But, it’s important to recognize those people in our lives who drain your spirit more often than they replenish it. Mindfulness and self-reflection can help you identify energetic takers and give yourself permission to interact with them consciously.

Who is an energetic giver?

On the other hand, energetic givers refill our spiritual and physical reserves. You can identify them as people who leave you feeling lighter after a conversation or inspire you to embrace joy. Many energetic givers have a strong sense of self, high levels of creativity or can be easily described as empathetic and warm.

Again, it’s essential to acknowledge that everyone is a giver and a taker. We all oscillate between low and high energetic battery levels. Staying conscious of negative versus positive stimuli can inform our high selves of our present experience.

Other examples of energetic supporters

  • Spending time in nature
  • Consuming nourishing whole foods
  • Hydrating your body
  • Listening to upbeat music
  • Movement
  • Taking time to rest
  • Cultivating a breathwork practice
  • Getting consistent sleep
  • Dancing freely (without self-judgment)
  • Giving out compliments to strangers

In conclusion

The people we spend the most time with have an enormous impact on how we move through life. Thought patterns, behaviors, motivations, and interests are all influenced by your inner circle. Therefore, it’s incredibly important to be mindful of whether you engage more with energetic takers or givers. While we don’t always get to choose who enters our lives, we do have power over whether they play a leading role in our story.

As summer begins to ease into autumn, the time for yet another transition is upon us. Whether it’s a significant life change or a shift in the temperature, it’s essential to ask ourselves, “How are you prioritizing your self-care as we move into this new season?”

Residing in and connecting back to my body, mind, and heart has been a daily priority through all the collective chaos. If I skip my morning routine or weekly sessions of self-care, I’m left feeling disconnected, overwhelmed, and swept up by the busyness of my mind. Having a space to focus my energy during these times of transition is invaluable.

Why change is challenging

We are connected to mother earth and her seasons. Fall brings my favorite energy of the year – the equilibrium of day and night, representing the light and darkness in our lives. The long summer nights have passed, and we are now in a season of transition. Autumn is a beautiful time to reset and honor yourself and all you have done these past few months. This is a time of harvest.

However, whenever we are forced through change, it can be unsettling. In-between states require us to let go of what we know and make room for new growth. We can spend a lot of time in our lives stagnant in comfort zones, suppressing the unlearning and relearning, and evolving consciousness. But, nature reminds us, as much of a struggle transition can be, it’s also the key to a beautiful creation.

Tools for staying mindful in turbulence

  • Dedicate yourself to a morning routine. This can be 10 minutes or 30, whatever works best for you. Having a calming start to the morning can help keep many people in a more present mindset throughout the day. Try committing yourself to a morning ritual of making tea or coffee, stretching or yoga, or meditative journaling even for just one week and see if you notice a difference.
  • Reflect on your gratitude for the past season, whether in written form, conversation with a friend, or in your meditation practice. When our lives feel unstable and uncertain, it can be easy to slip into a negative state of mind and lose awareness of the present moment.
  • Refocus on your nutrition. Our bodies are sources of untapped wisdom. Spend a few minutes checking in with your gut. How have you physically felt lately? Are you prioritizing your health with water, fruits, vegetables, and movement? With every new season comes fresh harvests of seasonal foods to ground you in the coming months.
  • Take time to pause. So often, we rush around our days, checking off to-do lists and always looking forward in anxiety and overwhelm. Seasons of transition are natural, obvious reminders to pause and make space for balancing rest. Breathwork and meditation can be powerful methods of reconnection with the nourishment of downtime.

Final Thoughts on Transition

Things are slowing down. The leaves will soon be changing colors, and trees will shed what they no longer need. The same is happening for you. You’re changing and releasing things you no longer need as you progress into the end of the year.

The tension of the unknown and the future may seem rife with confusion, fear, and apprehension. But, it’s important to remember the power you have over your mindset. A graceful, smooth transition as we leave the heat of summer behind is more than possible. You can always choose to be kind to yourself and engage in this upcoming transformation with a balanced heart.

Our bodies, minds, and spirits are intertwined on the deepest level. When we experience hardship on a mental, physical, or spiritual level, it’s not uncommon for us to feel those effects on multiple planes. In times of trial and tribulation, self-care holds an importance that detached, modern societies often overlook. I’m incredibly thankful for all that my past has taught me. As an empath, I see that each time I suppressed pain from my childhood or adolescence, it manifested into physical ailments within my body.

Now, as a fully grown adult, I understand that self-care is not a frivolous indulgence. It is a daily necessity to ensure that we are in balance at all levels of self. When we neglect our physical body, we feel imbalances creep in. When we ignore our mental or emotional body, we feel anxious and depressed. By disregarding our spiritual body, we feel completely disconnected.

What even is self-care?

Here is what self-care isn’t:

  • It is not selfish.
  • It’s not indulgent.
  • It is not dependent on extravagant income or gifts.
  • It’s not something you do only if you have time.
  • It is not a reward for checking items off the to-do list.

According to one research study of self-care assessments, it can be “defined as, “a multidimensional, multifaceted process of purposeful engagement in strategies that promote healthy functioning and enhance well-being.” Especially in hard times, a routine of self-care can mean the difference between resiliency and prolonged suffering.

How can I maintain my health when I don’t feel like it?

Every person on this earth will go through a season of life, if not many, that challenge everything. Whether it’s a breakup with someone you love, a failure or mistake, or a health crisis, feeling “bad” is a part of existence. However, when you feel awful, and the last thing you want to do is take care of yourself, small actions of kindness can lift you out of the dark.

Ideas for self-care:

  • Breathwork/meditation/yoga.
  • Take a nap if you need one.
  • Nourish your body with a home-cooked meal.
  • Connect with a cherished friend or family member.
  • Make time for a purely fun activity.
  • Go for a walk in nature.

We must commit to self-compassion, care, and love at all times along our journeys. If we don’t take the time to respect our bodies, minds, and spirits, the consequence is burnout and overall deterioration. Remember, we can’t pour from an empty cup, and we can’t help others without helping ourselves first.

Healing is an ongoing process and a wonderful opportunity to become more self-aware while prioritizing personal growth. But, just as everything has a set time and season, so does the healing phase.

As someone who’s spent many years struggling with chronic illness, I know what it means to feel physically stuck in a state of restoring. I also know the importance of using an integrative approach to physical, mental, and emotional healing to empower your own journey.

How can we get stuck in a healing phase?

It can be easy to fall into periods of self-help and intense introspection, especially if you’re first discovering the powerful benefits of this kind of healing for the first time. The limitless resources, books, video content, and even recent societal popularity about “improving” ourselves can quickly become all-consuming.

If you notice that it’s become difficult to listen to your intuition or know your own thoughts from those that you’d read or heard, it may be time to take a step back. Blindly following systems and advice from leaders, even well-intentioned healers whose ideology doesn’t align with your own, won’t lead to true healing. Imitation over inner wisdom isn’t the path forward.

Questions to ask yourself:

  1. Do I know more than ever but still feel like you’re constantly searching for an elusive, ultimate catch-all?
  2. Have the standards I’ve set for myself become unattainable or unrealistic?
  3. Has my anxiety/pain/disconnection increased or decreased?
  4. Am I procrastinating chasing my true desires and ambitions?
  5. Have I created anything recently or only consumed?
  6. Do I know what I believe? (Not any other voice)
  7. Am I afraid to trust my intuitive self?

What can we do to take a break?

When you’ve done tremendous amounts of inner healing and self-reflection, it’s important to remember actually to celebrate your progress. Acknowledge all that you’ve endured and achieved, and rest in gratitude that you’ve come so far.

Breathwork, yoga, nourishing nutrition, meditation, etc. are healing tools. They are meant to guide you towards your next season in life. Whether it’s scheduling more time for genuine fun, going out with friends and family, or an extra hour of sleep at night, rest is an essential part of healing.

Taking a break allows us the chance to reconnect and realign with ourselves, others, and the physical world. We all grow and heal at our own pace. So, honor where you are today. Remember this life is meant to hold space for hardship, joy, and everything in between.

It comes as no surprise that each and every person on this earth will face certain challenging experiences. Negative emotions, limiting thoughts, and spiritual trials are a part of life. Energetic blockages occur when those hardships prevent energy from flowing freely. Over time, these clogs potentially cause emotional, mental, and spiritual issues.

While a blockage doesn’t necessarily block the flow of energy entirely, it’s subtly is just as impactful in the long-run on your body. The many forms of breathwork can be invaluable in helping to clear these blocked emotions and energy, allowing you to embrace the fullness of your life.

How can I recognize energetic blockages?

Energetic blocks can be difficult to recognize at times because we aren’t always aware of the circumstances that cause them to occur. A wounded inner child or traumatic event can be repressed and forgotten, but their effects can persist. Learning how to realize the signs and get to the root cause can mean a world of difference in your everyday life.

Common manifestations of energetic blockages are:

  • Fear
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Sense of disconnection from self and others
  • Sluggishness
  • Stagnation
  • Anger
  • Sadness
  • Physical pain and tension
  • Overwhelm
  • Disconnection from dream state/interrupted sleep

So, how do we release them?

In order to live life to our fullest potential and in alignment with our Spirit, releasing energetic blockages is nonnegotiable. Just as you can’t build a new home on a broken foundation, we can’t expect to grow without healing.

The main modalities that I have personally used to release this heaviness from my body are:

  • Intention/Meditation
  • Prayer
  • Breathwork
  • Energy work
  • Plant Medicine
Committing to several breathwork sessions with an energetic healer gives your body, mind, and spirit the time to make a breakthrough.  Furthermore, understanding the intertwining of these three parts of your self will help unfurl the blockages in each area.

Final thoughts:

Just as our muscles get tight and constricted from simple daily activities, leaving us to seek relief with massages or chiropractic work, our emotional/energetic body operates in the same way. Staying consistent and attentive in your healing journey is key to seeing results. This is why prioritizing your breathwork practice at least once a month, whether that’s in-person with a guide or online in a virtual class, is imperative.
The reward for your work within is reconnection and finally embracing true alignment – the ultimate state of happiness, flow and abundance.

Learning how to listen to our intuition can be a difficult process thanks to the lessons many of us have learned from overly rational societal or familial suggestion. From a young age we’re taught to “keep it together” and tuck all of our true emotions alway. But this inner-hiding has consequences when it comes to understanding and softening to our intuition.

I know how tempting it is to pretend like everything’s perfect in our lives and hide our shadows. This neglect of my intuitive mind worked for me until it didn’t. I kept going until the stress, tension and overwhelm in my life began to bubble to the surface — manifesting itself as anxiety, digestive issues, body pain and a long list of mystery symptoms.

In a chronic state of flight of fight, I had no awareness this was the real cause of all the imbalances my body and mind were experiencing.

How can I tell if my intuition is muffled?

Let’s do a memory exercise. When was the last time you had a gut feeling about something? Intuition can sometimes seem like some complex, fantastical thing that some people have and others don’t. In reality, intuition is just an instinctive, inner-knowing. It’s the part of humanity that can “feel the vibe” in a room or with a person and whether it would be positive to spend your energy with that space.

German psychologist Gerd Gigerenzer defines intuition as “a form of unconscious intelligence that is as needed as conscious intelligence.” When we ignore our unconscious intelligence and override this feeling, life can feel harder, heavy, or more of a struggle. Our bodies can respond negatively with stomach aches, intense anxiety, or an overriding feeling of being out of place.

How can I start learning to listen to my intuition?

Tapping into your intuition can be a big adjustment! Most of the time, it’s more of a whisper than a yell. Many of adults already struggle to pay attention to inner cues, so this can be frustrating. Here are some of my favorite ways to hone in:

  • Commit to a daily mindfulness practice.
  • Try listening to your gut (or heart) about little things before big decisions.
  • Listen to a guided meditation. You can check out one of my recent podcasts here about how to trust yourself.
  • Pay attention to how you feel both after making a choice and throughout your daily habits.
  • Notice if a certain type of opportunity keeps knocking at your door (this can be your intuition attempting to get you to notice it!).

Listening to your intuition can help you feel more confident in decision-making and feel more at ease in social situations. Benefits like improved physical health and sleep cycles can also come from a stronger intuitive nature. The more you align with your intuitive mind the more peace you’ll find in your everyday life.

Our mindsets can radically, undoubtedly determine whether we view our lives in terms of abundance or emptiness. Our internal state reflects our outer world. If you truly want to call in abundance and co-create your life, you must begin by looking inwards.

Over the past decade, I have continuously worked to up-level all aspects of my life. In my twenties, the abundance I sought was in the material world. Though I was able to call it in, I soon realized that money did not equal happiness. Then, through my own 15+ years of health struggles, I learned that without your health, we have nothing. So I decided to heal myself and uncover the vitality buried under years of pain.

Where does this terminology come from?

Author Stephen Covey coined the phrase “abundance vs. scarcity mindset” in his book The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. However, the traits of cultivating an abundant mindset are ancient and rooted in spiritual wellness. For example, thinking and believing that there are more opportunities than limitations, gratitude is stronger than envious comparison and embracing rather than fearing change are all aspects of abundance.

Scarcity mindsets tend to include statements such as, “They always get what they want. I can’t have what they have. I don’t have enough ___.” It forces people to compete for resources, wealth, relationships, even love. It also pushes opportunities away. If you feel trapped in a fixed mindset, you’re more likely to stay stuck in the motions, unable to change, improve, or grow. Unlike an abundant growth mentality, scarcity thrives off of limited existence.

How can I create an abundance mindset?

  • Practice daily gratitude
  • Cultivate confidence in yourself and your purpose
  • Be intentional with your words and energy
  • Reduce your social media consumption (reduce comparisons)
  • Recognize your strengths and values

Dedicating yourself to thinking and living abundantly can lead you to genuine fulfillment, control over your emotional states, intensified creativity, and attracting positive affirmations with ease. In addition, cultivating abundance in your life is to believe in potential and in a more profound connection.

True healing and stepping into empowerment allow you to co-create abundance not only in your finances or career but in your relationships, health, joy, and freedom. You are uncovering your true power and purpose to its fullest. Practicing daily gratitude and presence taps you into this way of being. Though we will always experience obstacles and hardships as humans, we also can experience daily abundance in all aspects if we simply tune in.

It’s easy to feel defeated or impatient in our healing journey, be hard on ourselves, and compare to others’ highlight reels on social media. Most of us live in fast-paced, endless to-do lists. We find ways to cut corners, seek efficiency, and skip to the end of novels. Waiting in line for more than two minutes can seem like an eternity.

Impatience may not be intrinsically bad but can quickly become a block in our healing and self-growth journeys if we refuse to recognize its lessons.

What is the cost of being impatient?

Good things take time. How often have you heard that saying when expressing frustration because something you want isn’t happening on the timetable you’d prefer? Everyone loves when change happens quickly. Why wouldn’t we? Streamlined paths from start to finish seem like the best option from the outside. Unfortunately, obsession over speed and fast living usually equal a loss in intentionality and contemplation in the process.

But humans aren’t machines. Beautiful bodies and souls can transform given the time. We can’t fake real progress or speed up how long it takes to learn a lesson. We certainly can’t take a shortcut for inner work and healing. Various studies have even found there to be serious costs to human capital, mental health, and the effects of stress on the body, let alone the impact of impatience on spiritual growth.

How can we learn to embrace patience?

Learning to slow down and cultivate a more patient existence can be challenging. Transforming our inner dialogues takes grace and self-love. Here are just a few ways you can deal with an impatient mind.

  1. Focus on mindfulness and meditation. There are many ways to practice mindfulness and meditation, from listening to podcasts to seeking a guide for conscious breathwork. The more aware you are of the present moment, the less reactive you become to the inevitable moments of unexpected change you’ll face day-to-day.
  2. Celebrate the small wins (no matter how small). You have to start somewhere! Even if you begin just by practicing positive self-talk in the mirror or acknowledging one thing you’re grateful for in a day, pat yourself on the back. These types of positive recognitions can go a long way to remind yourself that what you’re feeling is temporary. The emotions that can stem from impatience – anxiety, stress, anger, etc. – will come and go.
  3. Reframe the story you’re telling yourself. Say someone just aggressively cut in front of you driving down the road. Audibly sighing, you’re irritated and annoyed that someone could be so rude and reckless. Pause. How could this situation be different? How can you give grace to this stranger? They may be having a horrible day. They might be on their way to the hospital to see a loved one. By focusing on why and how patience is important to you and ties into your values, the easier it’ll be to build up the skills to combat being impatient.

Last thoughts:

Looking back a decade, five years, even one year ago, I’m truly amazed at how far I’ve come in my spiritual journey. Staying patient and giving ourselves appreciation and encouragement for how far we’ve come is vital to success.

I’m in admiration of the person that I have transformed into as I continue to evolve into my soul’s purpose. The more we show ourselves this form of kindness, the more supported we feel through the process of inner growth and healing.

There are countless ways to incorporate the energy of a Full Moon into your healing journey. Full Moons are meant to be times of rejuvenation, release, and reflection – necessary steps along the path of change and growth.

Why are Full Moons important?

Humans have paid attention to lunar cycles for millennia all over the globe. Different cultures have varying rituals and symbolism for the moon’s phases. However, there is a modern sacredness about connecting with lunar energy. It’s a way to live more in sync with the environment and with yourself.

Once every month, the sun completely illuminates the moon’s surface, reflecting maximum light and vitality from the sun’s rays. All Full Moons represent a time of release. This is your chance to let go of heavy emotional weights and buried energetic stagnation. We must embrace all the dark aspects of ourselves if we want to come back into wholeness.

Try not to start something new during the full moon, such as a new project or embark, overwork or overstress yourself, or make any life-altering decisions. Full moons are powerful energetic culminations and upheavals, which can prompt rash decision-making. Instead, use this time to rest, reflect and release that which no longer serves you.

How can I harness the Full Moon’s energy beneficially?

Here are four ways I recommend preparing for and engaging with a Full Moon cycle:

  1. Set intentions through journaling.
  2. Practice a Full Moon guided meditation: Meditations during a full moon can be a powerful tool to connect with lunar energy. Try meditating before any ritual or task to align your mind and Spirit with your intentions.
  3. Join a healer for a conscious Breathwork journey to start releasing.
  4. Rest and eat nourishing foods for your body.

Often, we think that shadows should stay hidden because they cannot and should not exist in our conscious selves. Society tells us to focus on love and light, but never our darkness. Unfortunately, focusing solely on your positive side is easy and comfortable, but it keeps you stuck in your healing journey. Incorporating the grounding energy of a full moon into your spiritual practices can be an effective way of embracing your whole self.

“As the Moon falls into the darkness, it symbolizes all of our own dark emotions rising to the surface. All of the shadows that have lurked behind the scenes suddenly come into our awareness.

It is in the darkness that we can transform; it is in the darkness that we can connect with our own Spirit, and it is in the darkness that we can dream of a brighter and better world for all.” @foreverconscious

Mindful Eating

What I would have told my 25-year-old self in the beginning of my healing journey:

“Pause frantically seeking.”

“Stop looking solely outside of yourself for healing.”

“Rethink your belief that someone else holds all the answers.”

Retrospectively, I would’ve told my younger self all of these things because my greatest lesson learned time and time again has been that the answers, the healing, and the empowerment are inside of us. It’s always been there.

However, from the moment we’re born, we are taught to give our power away. We’re told to never look inward or pay attention to our bodily cues. As adults, many of us struggle to trust ourselves after the years of external encouragement to diminish our intuition. What white coats often fail to recognize, is that science is but one path toward healing.

Don’t we need doctors?

While I value the medical system for its urgent care and skilled doctors’ abilities to save lives, it misses the mark when it comes to preventive medicine. Unfortunately, treating the root cause of our society’s imbalanced system isn’t a priority.

Throughout my healing journey I’ve also learned about the deep connection between our biography and our biology. For example, the scientific community at large now validates the correlation between mental and emotional stress and the biological cascade of interactions that take place within our physical body when left unaddressed. Our personal stories, traumas, and emotional histories play a concrete role in our health.

It wasn’t until I understood this relationship that I began to address the healing of my mental, emotional, and spiritual body. I knew that by doing so, my physical body would naturally come back into a state of balance.

Ok, I’m fed up with feeling unheard or told nothing can done, now what?

I took sole responsibility for my healing. Embracing your part in the process is bittersweet. It can seem like you’re on your journey alone, but it’s also incredibly empowering and freeing.

Along the way I’ve had countless guides, teachers and mentors that have helped me to navigate this new inward terrain. I’m forever grateful to them for allowing me to feel supported through it all. Today, I’m incredibly humbled to guide others through the same self-healing journey of empowerment.

My hope is that everyone has the chance to discover their resilience to overcome and to be that authority within their own lives. Know that you do hold the potential for healing within you, and that belief is the first step forward.
